We were given a ten minute chat about Nairobi and where we needed to go for our first city experience and we were off on a bus to the Yaya center. So the fresh group of wazungu students got on the ''Citi Hoppa'' and it lurched forward as the last person got their foot in the door, so we all were sent flying to the back of the bus and EVERYONE got a hardy laugh at our expense. Honestly, it was pretty funny, we were laughing at our "tourist" mistake with everyone on the bus.
So the yaya center is a very westernized mall where we got coffee BUT on the second floor there is a Maasai Market which is something everyone visiting Kenya needs to experience, ESPECIALLY if they have never been to a traditional market where you are expected to barter. It was so much fun! They sell so many cool things that are handmade.. I think.. anyways, friends/family from home I bartered to get you some pretty cool presents. The people are the best salesmen ever, they could sell you your own shoes and they go crazy when an mzungu comes to see what they are selling, "My sister, my friend". I did some bartering, and the good thing about that is they won't sell you something if they are going to lose. I had so much fun bartering and I definitely plan on going back for more!
One of the most heartbreaking things about Nairobi, and any city for that matter is the amount of homeless people that come and ask you for money. There was a young boy who followed us through a park begging for money. Something I need to get used to, but I don't think it will ever stop breaking my heart.
The rest of the day we chilled with the driver Njau who is probably one of the most interesting characters here. We went to the Nairobi Museum, which wasn't spectacular, but it had a ton of information and *nerd alert* a really cool human origin and evolution exhibit. We also went to a reptile museum where we saw a lot of snakes and turtles native to Kenya. Overall it was a good day, we all hung out on the compound and had some KSP family bonding time!
